MP3 to Text Converter

MP3 is the format almost every recording starts life in — podcast episodes, interview captures, dictaphone exports and downloaded audio all arrive as MP3 files. TapeToText decodes the MP3 right inside your browser tab, runs the Whisper speech model on your own device, and hands you a clean transcript with timestamps. Because nothing is uploaded, even a two-hour interview never touches a server, and there is no per-minute fee hiding behind the word free.

What people transcribe from MP3

Podcasts, interviews & downloaded audio — the jobs this format shows up for most.

Podcast show notes

Turn a finished episode into searchable text for show notes, pull-quotes and chapter summaries without re-listening to the whole recording.

Interview transcripts

Journalists and researchers can transcribe recorded interviews privately — the audio stays on the machine it was recorded on, which matters for embargoed or sensitive material.

Lecture & call archives

Old MP3 recordings of lectures, webinars and calls become text you can search, quote and file alongside your notes in seconds.

The model is the same one the paid services use. The difference between a rough transcript and a clean one is almost always the recording — and a few format-specific habits.

Same privacy promise as every page on this site: your MP3 file is processed on your device and never uploaded.

MP3 tips from the field

  • MP3s encoded at very low bitrates (under 64 kbps) smear consonants — if you have the original recording, export at 128 kbps or higher before transcribing.
  • For long episodes, the Balanced model is the sweet spot; switch to Accurate for episodes with heavy crosstalk or strong accents.
  • Download the SRT export and you can reuse the same transcript as captions if the episode is later published as video.

MP3 transcription questions

The things people ask before converting a MP3 file.

There is no hard time limit, but very large files need more memory to decode in the browser. Files under 200 MB work comfortably on most devices; for multi-hour recordings, the Balanced or Fast model keeps memory use lower.

Ready when you are
